Meet The Band
Mudtown Stompers -- our name
We decided on a name shortly before our first semi-paid gig at St. Honere Bolangerei in 2008. We had been practicing at Mark Lindau’s (our founder, clarinet player, and purveyer of really bad jokes) house for a couple of years and as Portland’s rainy season only had only recently abated, mud seemed to be an appropriate theme. Nick Keyline, our trombone player at the time, designed our logo. We tried to convince our trumpet player that there was a resemblance, but it went unappreciated. |

Mark Lindau - Clarinet & Founder
A small group of musicians started rehearsing at Mark's residence in the mid-2000's to see if they could work up some Dixieland style music together. Mark Lindau (clarinet) is the band's founder. Mark grew up in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He has played in Clarinet since 7th grade and played with the University of Minnesota Marching Band. Mark had a practice in pediatric medicine at a private office near Washington Square . He did undergraduate and Medical School at Minneapolis with Pediatric Internship and Residency at the Cleveland University of Hospitals at Case. He was enrolled at the Air Force in Spangdahlem AFB in Germany. Mark also plays with the One More time Around Again Marching Band, and The Beat Goes On Marching band.

Mike Wheeler - Saxophone
I started playing clarinet in the 5th grade with a metal clarinet that had been found in a store-room. After I struggled for several months, my parents presented me with a decent Conn wooden clarinet for my birthday -- I was so amazed at the difference that I remained in band through high school, taking up tenor sax, bari sax, and oboe. After high school, I pretty much neglected music until I joined the One More Time Around Again marching band in 1986. Things have mushroomed since then & I now play several saxophones (from alto to bari), and clarinet. I play tenor & alto saxophone and arrange music for the Muddies. I play tenor sax with the OMTAAMB (33 years now) and lastly I play bari sax and clarinet for Second Wind Jazz (a local big-band group). I am a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) & work for TE Connectivity designing manufacturing machinery control systems.

Charlie Johnson - Cornet
I grew up mostly in a small town in far northern California. I started playing cornet in fourth grade, using the cornet my mother played when she was school age. I played thru high school and went off to college. Moved to Oregon to work at Intel. In 2006 I pulled out my horn again after not playing for 26 years. In addition to the Mudtown Stompers, I also play in The Beat Goes On Marching Band and the One More Time Around Again Marching Band. My primary instrument for Dixieland music is a 1950s era Old Recording cornet. I am married and have grown daughters.
